The history and uses of pallets in Barcelona

The pallets in Barcelona They are a very essential component of storage services. They act as the backbone of the storage system. They prevent product damage, act as buffers against forces that can cause breakage, and protect merchandise in all storage facilities. Its presence ensures that all items reach their destination safely.

Pallets emerged in the 20th century. People adopted the system of mainly using these pallets for storage and handling in logistics almost at the same time. As pallets developed, they in turn helped modernize the current logistics system. Previously, merchandise was loosely stacked, which was inefficient and caused severe damage to the products. With the advent of pallet storage, there has been a significant impact on the efficiency of transporting and shipping goods. Due to urgent requirements, several additions were made to the design of the pallets during World War II, so it was greatly improved. The companies made the following changes at that time:

  • The reuse of pallets began.
  • They introduced the concept of pallet grouping.

The types of pallets in Barcelona

  1. a) Based on dimensions

Europalet: Its measurements are 1200mmx800mm. Primarily used in Europe, the European Pallet Association administers it and claims there are around 500 million of these pallets in circulation. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has provided certification for this type of pallets. The measurements are usually decided based on the vehicle that will carry it to cover the maximum space. It has a self-weight of 25 kg and can withstand a load of 1500 kg when moving.

American Pallet: Its dimensions are 1200mmx1000mm. These are primarily used in the American and Japanese supply chains. They are also known as universal pallets or isopallets. They also weigh approximately 25 kg and can carry 1500 kg while moving. When kept on a static, solid and smooth surface, no more than 6000 kg can be held on the pallet.

Some other measurements that ISO has standardized are 1016x1219mm, 1165x1165mm, 1067x1067mm and 1100x1100mm. Its use is much less than the American and the Euro pallet.

  1. b) Depending on the number of entry points

Entry points are the points where the forklift inserts the fork to transport the load from one location to another.

4 Entry Points: This means that the pallet is accessible from all sides, and workers can use a forklift from any of them to move.

2 entry points: Labor can only access them from two opposite sides of the pallet. This means less mobility than the pallet with 4 Entry Points.
