Wooden pallets: what you need to know

Wooden pallets are the most popular option for companies that must transport merchandise. Whether for export or domestic use, wooden pallets are necessary in almost all industries. Its use is widespread, but each company must take into account its needs to choose the appropriate model.

The wooden pallets They mostly come in five models. The most used measurements of wooden pallets are the European ones, 1,200 x 800 mm. Euro pallets are followed in popularity by other common sizes such as 1,200 x 1,000 mm or 1,200 x 1,200 pallets. There are also half pallets, measuring 800 x 600 mm, so they are half of a Euro pallet.

How to choose the pallet that best suits me?

The most used wooden pallets are the so-called Type 1 Pallets. These are used for storage in conventional shelves or in compact shelves. They can also be used on wheelbarrows without difficulties. This model is suitable for automatic warehouses.

Within type 1 pallets are Euro pallets, which must comply with European regulations in their manufacturing and are distinguished by having a circular anagram with the letters EUR inside. These wooden pallets are the most recommended and the only concern will be finding the ones that provide the best quality.

The second group of wooden pallets according to their popularity are Type 2 Pallets, very popular in other countries and their measurement is 1,000 x 1,200 mm. They are used in conventional or compact shelving, as well as in push-back carts and in Pallet Shuttle. However, these wooden pallets can cause problems in roller push backs, in addition to not being the most suitable in stacker cranes or bilateral tower forklifts. They are also not advisable in the case of stackers.

On the other hand, type 3 and 4 pallets work for other types of storage, usually compact and conventional shelving. In these cases, care must be taken when handling wooden pallets, complying with safety requirements at all times.

Finally, wooden pallets of types 5A and 5B are also called half pallets. These wooden pallets are frequently used in the distribution sector of consumer products as they facilitate their handling at distribution points, for example, in supermarkets. They can be handled without restrictions by forklifts or with specific automatic conveyors. In addition, there are other types of less popular wooden pallets but suitable for the needs of customers and the products to be transported.
